The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
- Can you please tell everyone your name?
2. Tell us about your business and what you do?
I provide branding and online placement services to today’s leading authors and experts on prominent lifestyle websites.
3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?
It was never a choice. It is just who I am. I started my first business when I was 12, painting house numbers on curbs. I had my own ad agency when I was 19. I had a dear friend in the business and leaned on her for advice. I learned everything I could and just did it. Knowledge, courage, creativity and ultimately a vision and desire to help people put me on the path to being a life-long entrepreneur.
4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?
It all rests on me. I don’t have a ‘boss’ to pull me through the hard times, give me direction or take over on holidays. I need to be innovative and continuously pivot to keep up with the trends and changes in the industry of PR.
5. What do you love most about your job?
Helping people, both clients, and my media outlets, to grow their audiences and impact people’s lives in amazing ways.
6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
My daughters have both grown up and now work with me in my business. We have great business meetings while eating a sandwich under a tree somewhere in the mountains or on a beach! I also have a team of people I bring in from around the world to help grow the business. They are from places I have never been. It’s wonderful to help others run their own part of the business from their homes. It gives them choices they wouldn’t normally have in a conventional job.
7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?
Be 100% committed to your vision. Don’t let others change who you are to get you where they want you to be. You do need to be flexible and open to change, but never to the point where you lose who you are. You need to be authentic, or people see right through you. They need to trust you to work with you. So know who you are and stay true to that, no matter what.
