Pop Quiz, Monday with Stefanie Murphy, Founder at Emerson Strategic Communications


The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

2. Tell us about your business and what you do?

I’m Founder of Emerson Strategic Communications — a content strategy and development and PR consultancy born out of the philosophy that communication should be dynamic. Its impacts are most constructive when delivered not as a one-dimensional product but as a multi-faceted campaign driven across the right mix of channels for the organization.

3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?

At my best, I’m a problem solver. I gravitate toward unanswered questions and challenges. You could say it’s in my DNA. My grandmother ran a ranch with my grandfather during the Great Depression and owned multiple businesses in a time when women largely didn’t have the freedoms or resources to do so. Ralph Waldo Emerson is a great+ uncle and the way he used language to persuade people and to promote his philosophies has always been an inspiration to me. For someone whose first love was reading and writing, it made perfect sense to name my company after him. Emerson Strategic Communications is an homage to my personal heritage.

4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?

I’m a parent, and I think most parents will tell you that raising a family is challenging and time-consuming, even without other pressing responsibilities waiting in the wings! Ensuring that everyone in my life, including clients, gets the best of my time and attention, as opposed to most of my time and attention, is key for me. It requires focus and organization but, fortunately, I’m a gold-medal list maker.

5. What do you love most about your job?

Approaching each day with a clean slate. I also really like the proximity of my office to a refrigerator and fresh air. My son would tell you it’s my new business cards, and he’d also be kind of right.

6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?

My dog, Rex, brings me every toy from his basket and piles them up next to my chair until I play with him. When I’m too busy to play, he sits on my chair right behind me and pants in my ear and drools on my shoulder. I really enjoy that.

7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?

Seek counsel from people who have done what you’re doing and take the best parts of their advice to heart. Build a network of like-minded professionals who can support you and you can support them — a network and networking is a crucial piece of the puzzle, in my experience.
