The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you cannot learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
1.Can you please tell everyone your name?
2. Tell us about your business and what you do?
I own a boutique PR firm in Chicago. We specialize in technology, healthcare and lifestyle.
3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?
I wanted to leave my corporate job because my growth opportunities were limited in the company. At the end of the day, I wanted to create something bigger than myself and leave a legacy. Therefore, I wanted to start my own company. I told myself: If I was brave enough to emigrate from Nepal as a young woman, I can find the chutzpah to start my own brand and leave a footprint — a legacy — that is of value to me.
4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?
The world of entrepreneurship can be interesting, but challenging at times. Sometimes the unknown is scary. As a new business, even if you have a great business model and your services provide value, it may still take time to get new clients. In my field, getting a new client is dependent on multitude of factors and there are a lot of uncertainties.
5. What do you love most about your job?
My job as a CEO of a PR company is never mundane. In PR, I am constantly challenged to think strategically and think BIG. Especially, managing different client accounts that represent different sectors provide me with broader knowledge of various sectors and learning about new things keep me motivated.
6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I incorporate laughter into my work culture. A little laughter helps me connect with my clients and team. There’s time to be serious and time to lighten up at work.
7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?
Be comfortable with the idea of being uncomfortable. As business owners, we must be willing to step out of their comfort zones. Once you embrace the notion that being uncomfortable is okay, you can move past your anxiety and diversify your experiences.
