The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
1.Can you please tell everyone your name?
2. Tell us about your business and what you do?
My company, OutGrowth, partners self-starting college students with socially-conscious farms for residential, credit-bearing, out-of-the-office summer internships. I combine student travel with experiential learning and career competency building, creating the ultimate purpose-driven learning experience. Students tackle month-long business projects for small farm businesses, enabling us to grow small, sustainable operations while we grow the next generation of businesses leaders and environmental stewards.
3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?
I long had a dream of building something from the ground up and creating something from scratch that would change the way we view education, work, and meaningful living.
4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?
I think the most difficult parts of running a business involve the balance of thinking big, but scaling efficiently; of staying true to your mission while always remaining nimble, listening to the market; of being ambitious but patient; of learning from critiques but staying fiercely confident.
5. What do you love most about your job?
I love love love collaborating with students and farmers. To create a community of people devoted to making a difference in the world while getting to observe their impact first-hand is a dream come true.
6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
My fun comes from getting to travel to new farms and regions, spending time on the road and interacting with people from all walks of life. A devoted traveler, I live for the moments where I get to take off and discover new territories.
7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?
Give yourself a long runway. It will take more time, energy and resources than you anticipate to make your dream a reality. The number one characteristic of a successful entrepreneur is perseverance. Don’t put much stock in the failures and the “no’s” because in the end, if you aren’t terrified, you probably aren’t thinking big enough.
